The days when we only had a few payment options usually cash or card are long gone. Technology has made strides in the financial sector, offering numerous ways to pay for goods and services. One of the biggest revolutions has been in the use of digital payment platforms, especially mobile wallets like Apple Pay and store-specific options like Kroger Pay.

As one of the largest supermarket chains in the United States, Fred Meyer has had to adapt and expand its payment methods to meet customer demands. The question that we aim to answer today is: Does Fred Meyer take Apple Pay and Kroger Pay?

Introduction: A Little About Fred Meyer and the Digital Payment Revolution

Fred Meyer, founded in 1922 in Portland, Oregon, has been an American staple for nearly a century. In 1998, it became a part of the Kroger family, making it part of one of the largest retail companies in the world. With over 130 stores spread across five states, Fred Meyer offers one-stop shopping for everything from groceries to electronics, home goods, and even jewelry.

The growth of digital payments has been astronomical. According to Statista, the total transaction value in the Digital Payments segment is expected to reach $6,685,102m in 2021. Apple Pay and Kroger Pay are two significant players in this expanding market.

Unpacking the Payment Options

Apple Pay

Apple Pay is Apple Inc.’s digital wallet and mobile payment service, launched in 2014. It allows users to make payments using their iPhones or Apple Watch, employing near-field communication (NFC) technology to facilitate transactions.

Kroger Pay

Kroger Pay is a mobile payment solution designed by Kroger, which operates more than 2,700 stores across America under various names, including Fred Meyer. It’s a QR code-based payment method integrated within the Kroger app.

Does Fred Meyer Accept Apple Pay and Kroger Pay?

The Status with Apple Pay

As of my last update in January 2022, Fred Meyer does not universally accept Apple Pay across all its stores. While you may find some locations where employees allow Apple Pay transactions, these are exceptions rather than the rule.

The Scenario with Kroger Pay

Given that Fred Meyer is part of the Kroger family, it’s no surprise that the stores do accept Kroger Pay. The mobile payment solution has been increasingly promoted within the stores, offering an easy and quick checkout experience for customers who have the Kroger app installed on their smartphones.

Why Doesn’t Fred Meyer Universalize Apple Pay?

There could be several reasons behind Fred Meyer’s hesitancy to roll out Apple Pay across all stores:

1. Kroger Pay Promotion: Fred Meyer might be focusing on promoting its parent company’s payment method, Kroger Pay.
2. Transaction Fees: Apple Pay charges a small transaction fee, which retailers must absorb or pass on to customers.
3. Technological Limitations: Not all Fred Meyer locations may have the technology needed to process NFC payments like Apple Pay.

How to Use Kroger Pay at Fred Meyer

1. Download the App: First, make sure you have the Kroger app on your smartphone.
2. Set Up: Open the app and set up Kroger Pay by linking your preferred payment method.
3. At Checkout: When you’re ready to pay, open the Kroger app, tap Kroger Pay, and then show the QR code to the cashier to scan.

Summary

Fred Meyer, being a part of the Kroger family of stores, does accept Kroger Pay across its locations, making it a convenient option for those who frequently shop there. On the flip side, the acceptance of Apple Pay is not universal at Fred Meyer stores, something to consider for those who rely on this digital wallet for transactions.

Each payment method comes with its set of pros and cons, ranging from universal acceptance to added functionalities. Ultimately, understanding these payment options can help you navigate your shopping experience at Fred Meyer more smoothly, providing not just convenience but also a touch of modernity to your retail experience.
